เรื่องนี้เคยถูกนำมาฉายโดยช่อง 3 ในปี 2531 ในชื่อ "วีรบุรุษหน้ากากดำ".. ตอนนั้นผมยังเรียนชั้นประถมต้น... จำได้ว่าตอนนั้นจะมีแก็งค์จักรยานเด็กกวนเมืองในซอยออกมาแล่นกวนชาวบ้านให้รำคาญเล่น (ผมก็เป็นหนึ่งในแก็งค์นั้น....) สมัยนั้นนี่บ้าเรื่อง Rider Black กันมากครับ.. แต่ละคนชอบทำท่าแปลงร่างๆเหมือนกับว่าตัวเองจะเป็นไอ้มดดำ แถมชอบใส่ Rider kick .. Rider Punch เวลาเล่นมวยปล้ำกัน .... แบบว่า อินนนนมากๆ ตอนนี้นั่งนึกๆแล้วก็อิ่มใจเหมือนดูเรื่องแฟนฉันฉบับเราๆท่านๆ : )

เนื้อเรื่องของ Masked Rider Black มีลักษณะดราม่าที่ลึกซึ่งชวนติดตามเมือเทียบกับ Masked Rider รุ่นก่อนๆหน้า
ปมสำคัญคือพระเอก Minami Kotaro (สวมบทโดย Tetsuo Kurata) และ Nobuhiko Akizuki (สวมบทโดย Masaki Terasoma) มีความสนิทสนมกันเป็นพี่น้องและเพื่อน โดย Kotaro ถูกครอบครัวนี้เก็บมาเลี้ยงเนื่องจากพ่อแม่เสียชีวิตตั้งแต่เด็ก เมืออายุครบ 19 ปีทั้งคู่ถูกลักพาตัวโดยองค์กรร้าย Gorgom
ตัว Kotaro ถูกนำมาดัดแปลงเป็น Black Sun ส่วน Nobuhiko ถูกดัดแปลงเป็น Shadow Moon
โดย Gorgom ต้องการจะคัดเลือกผู้ที่จะมาเป็น Century King ยุคหน้า โดยตัดสินจากให้การต่อสู้ระหว่าง Black Sun และ Shadow Moon แต่ทว่าพ่อของ Nobuiko แอบเข้าไปและสามารถช่วยเหลือ Kotaro ให้รอดพ้นจากการล้างสมองและหนีออกมาได้
